These are the words of a woman living in a model village of Jharkhand called Bhaunro. Every morning, women of the village line up to fill their vessels with municipal supplied water. However, the water comes only for half an hour once in the morning. In such a scenario, everyone scrambles to fill their vessels before water runs out. Naturally there will be a struggle to secure water for themselves and their family.
"Lack of water is one of the primary reasons why people here continue to defecate in the open. If we use toilet, it takes more water as compared to going out. If the water runs out, we have to go to the nearest well or handpump a kilometre away. To wash clothes, we go to the nearest pond or river as there isn't enough water for everyone," said one of the woman interviewed by our Community Correspondent Saniyaro Devi.
Every house had to pay Rs. 350 to get the water connection. They also pay Rs. 30 monthly to continue the service. However, water supply is still very irregular and insufficient. Saniyaro Devi has worked with the community and sent an application to the Block Development Officer to improve water supply.
